This month’s theme was a birthday card. I make lots of birthday cards but with this one I wanted to limit myself to a straight forward card.

I had been busy making up the April Paper Pumpkin box and had enjoyed not needing to get extra kit out. Paper Pumpkin has been around for about 12 years in the United States and I have been really envious of the lovely cards that I have seen. The box comes with stamps, a mini ink spot plus everything you need to make the projects. The April box was lakeside themed. It contains everything you need to make 9 cards.

I was fortunate enough to be given the ‘red box’ on my trip to Cologne. I did take it to the caravan with me last time I went. I made one of the cards but then realised that each card could have eventually make more than just one card.

My starting point was some leftovers. I had a blue matting layer, a card base and and envelope. I opened up the envelope to create flat pieces that I could use.

I did a scrap folder raid and found a piece of Night of Navy that was cut to ‘layer’ size, half a sheet of Misty Moonlight Cardstock. I keep all of my Basic White scraps so dug out a couple of layer sized pieces, one for inside and one to use as a matting layer.

I used the Heartfelt Hexagon punch and cut out a hexagon from the lightest area of the envelope paper and then stamped it with a birthday greeting. I used Blueberry Bushel because it is a ‘richer’ blue than the Misty Moonlight so it stands out better against the mottled envelope paper. The greeting was my go to favourite ‘birthday wishes’ from the Simply Said stamp set. The set in such a bargain- it’s on the Last Chance list for only £8 ….. I don’t think there’s a stamp set that I have used more than that one!

So, cut a standard size card base 10.5cm x 14.8cm from the Misty Moonlight card stock.
10cm x 14.3cm white Basic White layer
9.5cm x 13.8cm Night of Navy layer

Stick the white layer onto the card base.

Punch out hexagons from the Paper Pumpkin leftovers using the Heartfelt Hexagon punch – another of my favourites from the Last Chance bargains. Cut 2 in half across the middle.

Choose one of the envelope pieces and stamp your greeting with Blueberry Bushel ink.

Using my card as a guide, notice that I have left a similar border around the darker blue mat when placing the hexagons.

The alternative is to cut an additional layer in the same colour (9cm x 13.3cm) and sticking the hexagons up to the edge before mounting it onto the 9.5cm x 13.8cm layer. This allows you to get straight lines rather than guessing or trying to measure. The hexagon with the greeting is raised up on Dimensionals. The others are stuck down with multi purpose adhesive.

I added Earthy Dots embellishments to the greetings panel.

Add the white panel to the inside of the card. You can add a strip of the blue and striped paper to one edge if you with.

This is your completed card.
